Welcome to the Team, Mya!

Committed to our mission to stand in the gap for vulnerable populations while empowering youth to actively transform their communities, we pride ourselves on being an organization that is deeply committed to its people. At ProAct, we have a diverse and innovative team of individuals who share a similar passion and dedication towards the youth we serve.
From our leadership to our board and each person involved, our goal is to provide an exceptional experience that will have a lasting impact that extends far beyond the service projects and workshops we initiate. To this end, we are excited to add Miss Mya Miller to the team as our newest Community Impact Concierge! Mya did such a great job in planning and coordinating our Youth Empowerment Camp this summer, that we were ecstatic to learn of her interest in this new role. Read below to hear from Mya in her own words.

My name is Mya Miller and I am one of ProAct Indy’s newest Community Impact Concierges. I strive to make a positive social change within my community and help others in any way I can. I was recently asked the question: What does community service mean to you? I answered this question by stating that community service to me is an honor in the sense that it gives you opportunities to not only connect but build relationships with others you may have not had the chance to. Community service is also a way to find yourself while being able to impact others. Some of the ways in which I serve is to follow a couple of my passions in life revolving around empowering youth and women!

In addition to my new role at ProAct, I am a student at the University of Indianapolis where I am majoring in Sociology with two minors, in Gendered Studies and Psychology. I also have a concentration in Community Inequality and Change. I am set to graduate with my Bachelor’s degree in 2021 and a Master’s in 2022! I also work at the University of Indianapolis’s Center for Service-Learning and Community Engagement as the Graduate Student Assistant. So I balance a diverse schedule to keep myself engaged in work that will deepen my understanding of intentional community engagement and positively impacting vulnerable communities.

I am excited to continue to work with ProAct as their motto, stand in the gap, allows me to live out my life’s purpose of being a helping hand to all while contributing to the transformation of local communities in meaningful ways.

I am looking forward to my role as a Community Impact Concierge as this role gives me the opportunity to bring my passions forward in a way that is impactful to my community. I am also looking forward to building new relationships with communities and partners who work with ProAct.

One of the biggest strengths that I am bringing to the ProAct team is my ability to bring those around me together. This strength is important when you are trying to stand in the gap for vulnerable populations as it is hard to implement a long-lasting transformation in these communities without a sense of belonging being built inside of the communities themselves. I hope that my strength will help build those relationships in these communities to help mobilize an upward momentum that creates a long-lasting positive impact in not only the lives of the individuals of each community we serve, but their communities and world as a whole.

I am eager to embody the principle portrayed in my favorite quote from Robert Ingersoll in which he states, “We rise by lifting others.” This serves as a motto for my life as it keeps me centered and committed to continue giving back and serving my community.

Join us in welcoming Mya to our team by sending her a congratulatory note to mya@proactindy.org. She would be happy to hear from you!
